Cuentan los
manuales que Wittgenstein escribió su Tractatus en las trincheras durante la primera guerra mundial. Pues no es el caso (para nada) de
Abelardo.
Continuo con los
daneses, esta vez Leif Grane y su libro Peter Abelard. Grane traza con maestría el perfil de Pedro Abelardo y quiero detenerme especialmente en unas líneas que cita Grane de su Autobiografía. Las he tomado de la traducción de
F y C Crowley para una edición de Allen & Unwin Ltd de 1970.
(El libro, en
general, es una maravilla, lo recomiendo vivamente)
Dice Abelardo:
“I was overcome
by such a love of scholarship that I Leith to my brothers the glory and honours
of war together with my inheritance and the right of primogeniture and broke
away completely from the Courts of Mars to be raised in the lap of Minerva. I preferred
the warfare of dialectical methods to all others teachings in philosophy, and
so I exchanged military weapons for others and set the battle of verbal dispute
above the trophies of war.” (HC, Ch I)
Sin duda un
intempestivo pacifista!
